There is a great book by UNLV Professor David Schwartz that goes deep into the history of gambling. Hazard is an old English dice game. It's mentioned in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Basically, the first player ('caster') chooses a 'main' number between 5 and 9 and then tries to roll a number depending on its main (Five is 'nicked' by 5, 6 by 6 or 12, 7 by 7 or 11, 8 by 8 or 12, and 9 by 9). Many Medieval Games incorporate the losing and winning of money, but some rely completely on luck. These games of luck are classified as Gambling Games; the following are a few examples. Gluckhaus (House of Fortune) is a German gambling game played with two dice.
